On Tasmania's northwest
coast, the Nut is a 143-meter-high volcanic plug, which looms over the
picturesque heritage town of Stanley. Matthew Flinders, who viewed it in 1798,
thought it was reminiscent of a Christmas cake with its steep, rounded sides
and flat top.
